The equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is classified among the Herpesviridae and is one of the most frequently encountered pathogens in the equine population. This virus can cause a respiratory form of disease, abortion or still-birth, an ocular form of disease or a nervous form of disease that can lead to euthanasia of the animal. Prevention measures including vaccination are the primary barrier against the virus. In case of an epizootic, the tracking and identification of the strains can be a precious help to understand infection mechanisms.
