The Women Who Run

In the setting of New York State, in the 21st century, it is quick to assume that women are liberated from the typical challenges of sexism. Yet, the number of women working in politics in the United States, inclusive of New York State, still fails to fairly represent the number of women living in American society. Why is the United States behind many other countries that have been able to reduce the underrepresentation of women in the field of politics? Often, a lack of gender quotas for political parties are found to be responsible. Yet, cultural reasons are sometimes overlooked as a determining factor in discouraging women to run for office. ‘The Women Who Run New York State’ examines the challenges six New York State Senators faced running for public office, their struggles as women in politics, and their advice for other women and non-boys
