Applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics Software

This project involves an exploration of how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software can be utilized in more specialized fields beyond the typical large-scale applications in the aerospace and automobile industries. While the details of grid generation, CFD algorithms, and turbulence models are very important to effective use of CFD programs, the focus of this project is specifically on its applications to fluid mechanics. Fluid flow problems exist in numerous engineering applications from the manufacturing processes of the food and beverage industry to the study of sleep apnea and ear, nose, and throat diseases. Through analyzing CFD mesh structure, examining research papers, and analyzing engineering case studies on this topic, new areas that can benefit from CFD have been recorded and hypothesized in this project. Expanding the field of applications for CFD programs is important to increasing technological advancements in the smaller scientific fields because it allows for more precise fluid flow calculations, eliminates the need for excessive trials, and improves overall efficiency by allowing for faster result analysis
