Butyrylcholinesterase activity determination in agricultural workers out of spraying season

Cilj ovoga rada je bio da se utvrdi svrsishodnost određivanja, van sezone primene pesticida, aktivnosti butirilholinesteraze (BuChE) u krvi radnika koji su povremeno ili stalno na radnom mestu, tokom višegodišnjeg perioda, u neposrednom kontaktu sa pesticidima. Dva puta je ispitivana grupa I od 95 povremeno izloženih poljoprivrednih radnika, i do četiri puta grupa II od 29 stalno izloženih radnika u poljoprivrednim apotekama (75 ispitivanja), u toku petogodišnjeg perioda . Rezultati su upoređeni sa rezultatima 111 osoba kontrolne grupe. Srednja vrednost aktivnosti BuChE za kontrolnu grupu je iznosila x̄ = 1,828 ΔpH/30 min. (SEx̄ =0,014), a donja granica normalnih vrednosti (1,6) nalazila se na izračunatom centilu C 6,2. Za grupu I u prvom ispitivanom periodu x̄1a= 1,645 (SEx̄=0,017), dok je položaj donje granice normalne vrednosti C 38,9, a u drugom x̄1b= 1,622 (SEx̄=0,021) i C 40,1. Za grupu II x̄ = 1,680 (SEx̄= 0,023) i C 29,2. Upoređenjem rezultata ispitivanja sa rezultatima kontrolne grupe pokazuje se statistički značajno sniženje aktivnosti BuChE (p < 0,01) u grupi I u oba merenja, kao i u grupi II. Međusobno upoređivanje rezultata izloženih radnika nije dalo statistički značajne razlike. Dobijeni rezultati ukazuju da učestala izloženost pesticidima produžava vreme potrebno za regeneraciju enzima BuChE, i opravdava njegovo određivanje pri kontrolnim pregledima i van sezone prskanja.This paper aims at proving the usefulness of determination of butyrylcholinesterase activity (BuChE) out of the spraying season, in workers exposed to pesticides periodically or permanently over a period of several years. A group (I) of 95 agricultural workers periodically exposed to pesticides was examined twice, and another group (II) of 29 permanently exposed workers up to four times. The results were compared with the results for 111 control workers. The mean value for BuChE activity in control workers was x̄ = 1.828 ΔpH/30 min (SD = 0.148), and the lower normal value (1.6 ΔpH/30 min) was C 6.2. At first examination Group I showed x̄1a = 1.645 (SD = 0.170), and the lower level of normal value C 38.9. At second examination the respective values were x̄1b = 1.622 (SD = 0.202) and C 40.1. The values for Group II were xII = 1.680 (SD=0.199) and C 29.2. The results showed a statistically significant decrease in BuChE activity (p < 0.01) in Group I as well as in Group II, at both examinations. Comparison of the results for the two exposed groups did not show a statistically significant decrease. The results obtained prove that repeated exposure to pesticides prolongs the time of enzyme BuChE regeneration, thus making determination of BuChE useful even out of spraying season
