For centuries, needlework was a central fact of life for American women, both an essential domestic duty and their primary, maybe sole, means of artistic expression. They sewed, knitted, crocheted, quilted and embroidered to provide their families with towels, table linen, garments and bedding. The work that follows is about a particular type of bedcovers, made of two layers of cloth padded with soft material held in place by stitched designs - quilts.
