Kinetic modelization of phenol biodegradation using Monod and Haldane models - effect of ammonium chlorid concentration.

International audienceThe aims of present work are the implementation of the depollution properties of bacterial consortium taken from the wastewater treatment plant of Boumerdes (Algeria). In order to evaluate the performance of this bacterial consortium for wastewater treatment, its ability to biodegrade phenol solns. was examd. For this purpose, degrdn. tests were performed in batch mode, for initial concn. of phenol varying from 40 to 350 mg.L-1, at a stirring velocity of 200 rpm, an initial pH of 8 and a temp. of 30°C. The bacterial consortium used biodegrade the phenol totally in the range study in 50 h. The exptl. results showed that an excess substrate phenomenon was obsd. at concns. above 125 mg.L-1. The Monod and Haldane models have been considered to describe the relationship between specific growth rate μ and the initial substrate concn. S0. The kinetic consts. detd. from the models are μm = 0.672 h-1, Ks = 149.54 mg.L-1 for the Monod model, and μm = 0.549 h-1, KS = 66.07 mg.L-1, KI = 236.47 mg.L-1 for the Haldane model.
