Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in one of the most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) with a prevalence in 10 to 20%, of cases in some developed countries. The Rome Foundation has drawn up Rome III criteria, diagnostic questionnaires and scoring algorithm for FGIDs, applicable in clinical practice and population studies.
