The article gives a historical overview of the political developments leading to the break-up of Yugoslavia and, subsequently, affirmation of the Croatian state and its territorial integrity. The initial international situation was not in favour of Croatian independence since the international community intended to preserve the common Yugoslav state. After the Croatian (and Slovenian) declaration of independence (1991) the EC and UN began to see the impossibility of a Yugoslav state, a fact soon highlighted by the aggressive Belgrade\u27s military intervention.
