Emmanuel Macron won the French presidency yesterday with an emphatic margin of 66 percent, that's twice the number of votes for his far right opponent Marine Le Pen. But that wasn't the case in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia where the margin was much slimmer. Marine Le Pen won 47 per cent of the vote, giving her some of the best results of any electorate. It's hardly surprising given that the far right leader had said she would respect New Caledonia's referendum on independence next year while President Macron has made it clear he wants the island to remain under French control
