The establishment of the Datong Schools in Yokohama and Tokyo is a symbol of Chinese intellectual efforts to confront the crisis brought on by Western imperialism. Unable to bring about meaningful reform in China, they turned to Japan as a place in which they could both effectively study the so-called 'New Learning' as well as train a new generation to bring China into modernity without losing them to the West. These few years represent a period of Sino-Japanese elite cooperation in which a Confucian-centered Asian modernity was imagined.
