Master’s thesis Curriculum in Landscape ArchitectureThe subject of the current thesis focuses on green firebreaks as a tool to reduce and control the impact of wildfire occurrences in Alferce, considering changes in climate, biophysical, social and economic sphere. Alferce suffered extreme losses from wildfire occurrences, especially in 2018. A massive wildfire started on 3rd of August and burned for eight days, destroying around 27 000ha of land. A combination of several problems such as poor planning, difficult accessibility, lack of effective preventive measures, the dominance of monocultures, high temperature, water scarcity rendered the firefighting ineffective. This extreme scenario is a repetition of the 2003 occurrence, an alarming situation showing that very little changed since then and, if nothing is going to be improved, experts predict a new catastrophe by 2030 (Cancela et al. 2020). As long as managed, wildfire has an essential and complex role in promoting biodiversity (Kelly and Brotons 2017). Because of human intervention, this natural event has been aggravated, especially in Mediterranean countries. To reduce the negative impact of extreme wildfires, forest areas should be organized, and access improved while considering fire management solutions to control its spread (Bento and Lopes 2011). The outcome of this thesis is the design of a fire resilient forest landscape combining UK forest design methods adopted to the Mediterranean climate combined with fire-prevention methods. Since conducting any practical experiment is impossible, the proposal is based on theoretical information.Käesoleva lõputöö keskendub rohelistele tuletõkestusvahenditele kui vahendile Alferce'i maastikupõlengute mõju vähendamiseks ja kontrollimiseks, arvestades kliima, biofüüsikalise, sotsiaalse ja majandusliku sfääri muutusi.
