Seed germination and photosynthetic responses of Miconia albicans (Sw.) Triana (Melastomataceae) and its establishment capacity in altered palm swamp

The Cerrado is composed of a mosaic of phytophysiognomies, has different environments, with wetlands contrasting with areas under water-restricted conditions. Between an area and other species that get priority in two environments. The genus Miconia, with great representation at the Panga Ecological Station in Uberlândia - MG, is present both in the cerrado stricto sense and on the edge of the palm swamp. Miconia albicans, a species that occurs widely in the cerrado, found on the edge of the palm swamp of the Panga Ecological Station, which is drying due to disturbances in the surroundings of the conservation unit. This study aims to find differences in intraspecific variability and germination of Miconia albicans seeds, as well as to evaluate the gas exchange of the species in both environments. In the first chapter, the germination processes were affected by the intraspecific variability imposed by the palm swamp mother plants in the expression of germinability, average germination time and average speed. In the second chapter, the species showed greater efficiency in its gas exchange on the palm swamp for transpiration rate, intercellular concentration of CO2 and instantaneous efficiency in water use. Entre uma área e outra encontramos espécies que conseguem sobreviver nestes dois ambientes. O gênero Miconia, com grande representatividade na Estação Ecológica do Panga em Uberlândia - MG, está presente tanto no cerrado sentido restrito quanto na borda da vereda. Miconia albicans, espécie de ampla ocorrência no cerrado sentido restrito, foi encontrada na borda da vereda da Estação Ecológica do Panga que está em ressecamento devido as perturbações no entorno da unidade de conservação. O presente estudo tem por objetivo, encontrar diferenças na variabilidade intraespecífica e na germinação de sementes de indivíduos de Miconia albicans bem como avaliar as trocas gasosas da espécie quando estabelecida nos dois ambientes. No primeiro capítulo, os processos germinativos foram afetados pela variabilidade intraespecífica imposta pelas plantas-mãe de vereda na expressão de germinabilidade, tempo médio de germinação e velocidade média. No segundo capítulo, a espécie apresentou maior eficiência em suas trocas gasosas na vereda para taxa de transpiração, concentração intercelular de CO2 e eficiência instantânea no uso da água. Com isso, conseguimos inferir que M. albicans pode ser considerada modelo biológico e bioindicadora de veredas perturbadas, atuando como potencial espécie dominante
