Povećanje potraţnje 2,3-butandiola potaknulo je istraţivanja biotehnološke proizvodnje 2,3-butandiola sa ciljem zamjene dosadašnje kemijske proizvodnje. U ovom radu istraţivana je proizvodnja 2,3-butandiola s bakterijom Paenibacillus polymyxa DSM 742, tijekom kojeg se ispitivao rast pri različitom pH (3, 4, 5 i 6,5), utjecaj broja okretaja (50, 150 i 200 minˉ¹) i početnih koncentracija (10, 20 i 30 g Lˉ¹) glukoze ili ksiloze u podlozi na prinos 2,3-butandiola te utjecaj acetata na proizvodnju 2,3-butandiola. Soj DSM 742 ne raste u rasponu pH vrijednosti od 3 do 5 jedinica.
