Del objeto al espacio. La «indisciplina» de Christo and Jeanne-Claude

There is a conceptual leap from Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s first works to their latest projects. In this paper we have seen how they seek to transcend disciplinary boundaries in an evolution that last less than twenty years. From the late fifties to the sixties. In Christo and Jeanne-Claude, we shall find a first period when they lived in Paris. During this period, they created art in the form of an object. Avant-garde art referenced to artists such as Picasso and Duchamp. Then, in a second period, their idea of art evolved from objects to space. This change of mentality coincided with a change of residence. From Paris they moved to New York, where they discovered the possibilities of space. They worked under the influence of artists such as Pollock and the Pop-Art movement. From that moment onwards, their production exceeded any disciplinary limits. It could be given multiple definitions to categorise it - such as installation. Vamos a comprobar cómo buscan trascender los límites disciplinares en un proceso de evolución que apenas dura veinte años. Nos centraremos en finales de los cincuenta y la década de los sesenta. En una primera etapa, que corresponde a su periodo de residencia en París, entienden el arte de una manera objetual. Un arte de vanguardia que tiene de referencia a figuras como Picasso y Duchamp. En un segundo momento, su idea transita del objeto al espacio artístico. Un cambio de mentalidad que coincide con un cambio de residencia. De París se trasladan a Nueva York, dónde descubrirán las posibilidades del espacio y trabajarán bajo la influencia de artistas como Pollock o los del Pop-Art.
