Serotonin as a signaling molecule in peripheral tissues

Uz ulogu neurotransmitera u centralnom živčanom sustavu, serotonin (5-hidroksitriptofan, 5-HT) je pleiotropni hormon i lokalni regulator u perifernim tkivima organizma, tj. u tkivima koja nisu dio središnjeg živčanog sustava. Perifernim serotoninom smatramo 95% ukupnog 5-HT, sintetiziranog većinom u enterokromafinskim stanicama gastrointestinalnog epitela. U ovom radu detaljnije su obrađene uloge serotonina u perifernim tkivima, među kojima su uloge u srčanom i krvožilnom sustavu, u gastrointestinalnom sustavu, bijelom i smeđem masnom tkivu, koštanom sustavu te u mliječnoj žlijezdi.Beside the role of a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, serotonin (5-hydroxytryptophan, 5-HT) is a pleiotropic hormone and a local regulator in the peripheral tissues - tissues that are not part of the central nervous system. Peripheral serotonin represents 95% of the total 5-HT, mainly synthesized in enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract epithelium. This thesis is a general review of the roles of serotonin in peripheral tissues such as cardiovascular, gastrointestinal system, white and brown adipose tissue, skeletal system and in the mammary gland
