Eukarioti sadrže sve tipove introna, a najčešći su spliceosome-alni introne, uz koje su povezani fenomeni kojima se utjecalo na evoluciju proteina. Miješanje egzona omogućava stvaranje proteina s novom ili izmijenjenom funkcijom brže od dobivanja novih proteina mutacijama postojećih.
