Mickiewicz’s poetic debut Zima miejska (City Winter) coincides with the activity of the Society of X’s (Towarzystwo Iksów) from Warsaw, gathering representatives of the political and cultural elite of Congress Poland. They made a concerted attempt to fight for high quality of the repertoire and plays staged in the National Theatre, which was to be the beginning of a campaign to “increase” the cultural level of the society. Zima miejska represents classicistic descriptive poetics and as such would have found recognition in the eyes of the X’s.
