A Place Which Never Remains Unchanged: On the Experience of Nature and Its Role in Depictions of Święty Krzyż in Polish Travel Accounts of the Nineteenth Century

The article discusses how the experience of nature, acquired through the 19th century hikes in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, is used to create diverse depictions of Święty Krzyż. A chronological approach, chosen for this analysis, allows the author to reveal the evolution of the image as well as to capture the factors affecting its metamorphosis. Inspired by geopoetics and geocriticism, the author analyses particularly interesting accounts by Kazimierz Władysław Wójcicki, Bohdan Dziekoński, Oskar Flatt, and Jadwiga Łuszczewska (Deotyma). Therefore, the article explores a variety of significantly different images, ranging from gloomy and gothic depictions to the epiphanic vision of Święty Krzyż, illuminated by the blaze of the rising sun.
