Far from being a lining structure with a role of mechanical barrier, the human bronchial epithelium is a highly differentiated and diversified tissue interacting with the respiratory tract and the environment. Among the functions of the bronchial epithelium in diseased airways, its role as a first line protagonist in bronchial inflammation and mucosal immunity is well established. In particular, the airway epithelium plays a central role in the regulation of eosinophilic inflammation in the respiratory tract and is responsible for the production of SC and active transport of dIgA into the airways secretions as S-IgA.
