Background: Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent metabolic disorder. Insulin and oral hypoglycemic drugs are the basis of diabetes therapy. Nevertheless they have important side effects and are not always satisfactory in maintaining euglycemia and avoiding late stage diabetic complications.
