Probiotic isolation and application in marine aquaculture

By 2030 aquaculture production is expected to reach 109 million tonnes, an increase of 32 percent over 2018. These data can give us an idea about the importance of aquaculture as economic activity. But, due to intensification in aquaculture practices it is necessary to develop natural and eco-friendly alternatives allowing the growth of this economic activity without compromising the health of fishes, consumers and environment. The use of probiotics in aquaculture has been increasing during the last twenty years due to the benefits that they exert on cultured species, and because they can be considered as a promising alternative to antibiotics.This chapter reviews present knowledge in probiotic isolation and application in marine aquaculture with special emphasis on challenges that need to be overcome to ensure that adequate probiotics are applied to obtain the wanted effects
