This essay analyzes the development of American women’s art from the first decades of the 20th century through the 1990s. The first one is painter Georgia O’Keeffe, who became an early symbol of a female artist and a model to follow in treating gender issues during the second half of the century. Photographer Diane Arbus represents the pre-feminist genera- tion of women who grew up in the postwar, while painter Judy Chicago emerged as a pioneer of what is known as Second Wave Feminism of the 1960s.
