Big Data, Small Data, Broken Windows and Fear Discourse: Brexit, the EU and the Majority Illusion

Although Brexit has been considered an unexpected ‘incident’ by the majority of observers, this paper challenges this idea. It thus considers the recent discussion on ‘filter bubbles’ and ‘selective exposure on social media’ Spohr (2017) to document how an increasing consumption of news and information through specific web platforms has effects on the ideological polarization of public opinion. These thus explain the genesis of this particular event. It will be shown how these dynamics have been considered by the Vote Leave campaign during the 2016 EU referendum in the UK. Exploiting echo chambers they were able to successfully crystallize a number of issues through a narrative that resonated with the British voters’ feelings transforming them into ‘issues’ that could be identified in a single concept: a populistic and creeping xenophobic fear discourse (Wodak 2015). To verify this hypothesis two specific corpora, covering the referendum campaign, were created and are analysed by means of a multimodal analysis approach supplemented by netnography techniques. The first corpus is made up of 2,309 Facebook posts from the Leave.EU page. The second resulted from 367 articles from the Daily Mail. The first alarming result, a ‘self-reinforcing’ social division that endangers democracy, is discussed. In fact, filter bubbles are also associated with the emerging phenomenon of fake news. This division has been possible because the Vote Leave campaign generated a well-segregated echo chamber where voters focused on one narrative while ignoring the other (Del Vicario, Zollo et alii 2017). All the findings and their related big data are discussed against the theories of small data and that of broken windows (Gladwell 2002, Lindstrom 2016, Wilson and Kelling 1982). Key Words: Fake News, Multimodal Analysis, Brexit, Facebook, Ideological Polarization Riassunto Sebbene la Brexit sia stata considerata un ‘incidente di percorso’ inatteso dalla maggior parte degli osservatori, questo articolo mette in discussione tale convinzione. Prendendo le mosse dagli studi recenti sulle ‘filter bubbles’ e sull’‘esposizione selettiva sui social media’ Spohr (2017), il contributo discute come un incremento del consumo di notizie e d’informazioni attraverso specifiche piattaforme web abbia effetti sulla polarizzazione ideologica dell’opinione pubblica. Tali effetti spiegano la genesi di questo particolare evento. Si dimostrerà come tali dinamiche siano state considerate dalla campagna di Vote Leave nel corso del referendum sull’UE tenutosi nel Regno Unito nel 2016. Sfruttando le ‘echo chamber’, gli strateghi comunicativi sono stati in grado di cristallizzare con successo un numero di elementi attraverso una narrativa che è risuonata con i sentimenti dei votanti britannici e trasformandoli quindi in ‘argomenti’ che possono essere identificati con un solo concetto: uno discorso populistico di strisciante paura xenofobica (Wodak 2015). Per verificare l’ipotesi sono stati creati due specifici corpora, che documentano la campagna referendaria e che sono analizzati per mezzo di un approccio di analisi multimodale combinato con le tecniche di netnografia. Il primo corpus consiste di 2.309 post di Facebook tratti dalla pagina di Leave.EU. Il secondo è costituito da 367 articoli del Daily Mail. Si discutono le implicazioni del primo allarmante risultato, ovvero una divisione sociale ‘auto-rinforzante’. Non a caso le ‘filter bubbles’ sono anche associate con il fenomeno emergente delle fake news. Questa divisione sociale è stata possibile poiché la campagna di Vote Leave ha generato una ‘echo chamber’ ben segregata in cui i votanti si focalizzano su una narrativa ed ignorano l’altra (Del Vicario, Zollo et alii 2017). Tutti i risultati e i big data a essi correlati sono discussi alla luce della teoria sugli small data e quella delle broken windows (Gladwell 2002, Lindstrom 2016, Wilson e Kelling 1982).
