Francis Poulenc’s opéra bouffe Les Mamelles de Tirésias has been frequently characterized by critics and scholars as a light-hearted breath of relief following the Second World War. An analysis of the work in the context of twentieth-century French political discourse on reproduction, however, reveals a strong political subtext to the opera’s farcical story.
