OBJECTIVE: Thyroid hormones (TH) are essential for the homeostatic control of energy metabolism and the regulation of body temperature. The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis is regulated by negative feedback mechanisms ensuring that TH levels are maintained at a constant level.
