This contribution discusses possible and potential functions and uses of six groups of human figurines, which were recovered in sites from Iran and Iraq and which are dated to the late Neolithic to early Chalcolithic periods. By focusing on the material, morphology, modes of production, contexts, associated material, degree of detailing and traces of wear of the figurines, suggestions are put forward as to their possible use. By analyzing these criteria in depth for the sites of Jarmo, Sarab, Zaghe, Choga Sefid, Choga Mish and Choga Mami, evolutions in production, posture and presentation of human figurines can be traced and a suggestion as to a function of figurines as reflectors of changing life stages can tentatively be put forward
