Purpose: Self-regulation can refer to a dimension of temperament (i.e., effortful control), to a set of cognitive processes involved in higher-order control (i.e., executive functions), or to the physiological regulation of the stress response. Effortful control describes the ability to voluntarily manage attention and inhibit or activate behavior as a need to adapt.
