Lichens are symbiotic fungi, the chemistry of which has been used by humans since antiquity. They were however not studied with modern tools in metabolomics, which contributed in cementing the idea that lichens have poor chemical diversity. They are traditionally associated with 1050 molecules, although this figure is dated and does not seem to match the number of lichen species (19 387). In the field of metabolomics, LC-MS and dereplication using databases are frequently used for chemical profiling. These databases are nevertheless not adapted to the study of lichens, since they produce unique metabolites.
