Note présentée par Jean AubouinInternational audienceAnalysis of data collected during the Leg 3 ofthe french-japanese Kaiko cruise (1984), lead us to propose amechanism for the tectogenesis of the Japan trench landward lower slope in one of the mostintensively studiedsubduction zone in the world (off Sanriku, NE Japan). We show that the N-S trending horsts and grabens faultset, related to the bending of the oceanic plate when entering the subduction zone on onehand, and the ancientnormal faults set (approximatelyN65°) inherited from the original structure of the oceanic crust onthe otherhand are reactivated below the continental margin, thus inducing gravity sliding in the upper plate along thesestructural directions.
