Major: PhysicsFaculty Mentor: Dr. Erich Gust, Engineering and Physics We have measured the resonant frequencies and widths of sound resonances in gases in a cylindrical cavity over a wide range of cavity lengths and pressures. The resonance widths, which are related to the decay rate of sound vibrations, show an interesting non-trivial dependence on the frequency of the resonance. The purpose of this project was to quantify these variations in Nitrogen, Argon and Helium gases. This data will serve as a reference for future applications of the apparatus to viscosity measurement and gas identification
