Related with the author’s passion for Venice and its festive customs, this research turns on the question of the concealment by the mask in La Serenissima during the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. It was at the XIIIth century that the first mask were attested. Throughout the centuries, the wearing of these ones came into general use, became institutionalized and controlled. The XVIIIth century appears as the golden age of the mask put on especially during the carnival in considerably enlarged time ; because it took place six months in the year. True outfit and prop of everyday, the mask does not loose for all that its symbolism.
