International audienceThe Maastricht Treaty founded the European Union. It is often presented as a successful example of economic integration within the framework of a market economy. It has been able to develop and expand, to offer a relatively efficient customs union and a process of economic integration that implies solidarity among its members. It has several common economic policies, notably concerning industry, trade, agriculture, the regions and the environment.
