Includes bibliographical references.Previously, brominations and chlorinations of adamantane following a free radical mechanism have been shown to yield mixtures of 1-halo and 2-halo adamantanes. Reactions taking place under conditions favoring an ionic mechanism have been shown to yield only the 1-haloadamantane. This work describes the action of iodine monochloride and iodine monobromide on adamantane yielding 1-chloro and 1-bromo- adamantanes. A detailed ionic mechanism of these reaction has been proposed.M.S. (Master of Science
