Une ville en ses archives : pratiques documentaires et pouvoirs dans une « bonne ville » de la fin du Moyen Âge, Troyes (XIIIe-début XVIe siècle)

This doctoral research aims to bring new light to the history of late-medieval urban government through a renewed analysis of the dynamics of municipal record-keeping. The rich archival documentation of the city of Troyes in Champagne reveals the scope of external injunctions and interventions, notably by the French king from the 14th century onwards, as well as the influence of political and social interplay on the production and conservation of written records. Patrician elites were instrumental in the framing of this archival memory, both at the end of the Hundred Years War and later in the 16th century. Identifying the documentary distorsions brought about by this selection process through a quantitative analysis of the Troyes municipal archives opens the way towards a reassessed, more balanced history of the city, taking into account all the actors and contradictions of Troyes’ civic life. Three institutions are at its core: royal officers; the town council, replaced in 1470 by an échevinage; the townsmen's general assembly. The first two have been associated with royal power since the establishment of a separate budget for fortification works; they are responsible for most of the records still extant. Their archives build the narrative of a seamless relationship between the king and his “faithful towns”, his “bonnes villes”, and were subjected to a process of “royalisation” which our study brings to light. The “royalisation” of municipal archives intensifies in the last decades of the Middle Ages when the recent échevinage seeks to consolidate its shaky legitimacy by valorising its ties with the monarchy. This was translated into a documentary overrepresentation of a handful of events materialising the key moments of interaction between Troyes and the King: the 1420 grant of privileges by Charles VI, the overtake of the city by Charles VII in 1429, Charles VIII’s royal entry in 1486. However, far from the excessively appeasing official discourse, certain records show a less streamlined reality, shaken by periods of strong opposition within the city. Behind the scenes, the archives of Troyes build a picture of a community life with its own places, times, and institutions in which the people of Troyes, producing their own discourse, work towards a Common Weal.Porter un éclairage nouveau sur l’histoire des pouvoirs municipaux à la fin du Moyen Âge à travers une analyse critique de la documentation urbaine, tel est l’objet de notre thèse. L’étude du riche fonds archivistique de Troyes permet de prendre la mesure des interventions et des injonctions extérieures, notamment royales, à partir du XIVe siècle, et d’évaluer le rôle des configurations politiques et sociales dans la production et la conservation de l’écrit. Le fonds municipal troyen est ainsi en partie le fruit d’une construction mémorielle fabriquée par les élites urbaines au sortir de la guerre de Cent Ans puis au XVIe siècle. Une fois repérées les modalités de distorsion de la documentation urbaine, grâce à une étude quantitative de l’ensemble du fonds, il devient possible d’écrire une histoire plus équilibrée prenant en compte l’ensemble des acteurs et les contradictions qui traversent la vie municipale troyenne. Elle est polarisée par trois institutions : les officiers royaux ; le conseil de ville, remplacé par l’échevinage en 1470 ; l’assemblée générale des habitants. Les deux premières, liées au pouvoir royal depuis la mise en place d’un budget spécifique pour les fortifications, sont les principales instances productrices et conservatrices de la documentation qui nous est parvenue. La mémoire qu’elles ont construite raconte l’union censée n’avoir pas connu d’accroc de la « bonne ville » de Troyes avec la monarchie. Le phénomène de « royalisation » des archives municipales révélé par notre enquête se renforce dans les dernières décennies du Moyen Âge quand l’échevinage récemment institué cherche à fonder sa légitimité encore mal assurée sur ses liens privilégiés avec la monarchie. Il se produit alors une surreprésentation dans les archives de quelques événements qui correspondent aux moments de rencontre entre Troyes et la personne royale : l’octroi de privilèges par Charles VI en 1420, la reprise de la ville par Charles VII en 1429, l’entrée royale de Charles VIII en 1486. Pourtant, loin de l’irénique discours du pouvoir, certains documents témoignent d’une réalité moins univoque traversée par de fortes périodes d’oppositions au sein de la ville. On y découvre surtout en filigrane toute une vie communautaire spécifique, avec des lieux, des moments et des institutions propres aux habitants qui, dans leurs discours, œuvrent à la recherche d’un Bien Commun troyen
