International audienceAs an introduction to a volume devoted to the study of oil lamps, we offer here a brief history of the underwater excavations of Arles-Rhône 3 (AR3) and a preliminary study of the port dynamics that led to the recovery of this Gallo-Roman barge. This barge was in fact buried under 900 m3 of sediment including thousands of amphorae and ceramics. Contrary to the amphoras, which quite logically define the main nature of the dump, namely that of a load-breaking zone at the interface of maritime, river and road routes, the interpretation of the ceramics requires a different approach.
