International audienceI throw a ball straight up. What are the forces acting on the ball while it goes up ? This question, which seems easy for a physics teacher, is difficult for our students. A large part of them answers «a large upward force and a small downward one». They argue that if it goes up, it's because a force raises the ball upward. In the 80's, international research studies have shown that students possess misconceptions in mechanics hat interfere with what we want to teach them. This paper presents a snapshot of what our students are thinking at various level of qualifications, in the french education system.
