While working on "The Emergence of the American University, 1865-1910," for my doctoral dissertation in American history at the University of California at Berkeley, I visited the archives of eleven leading universities. My study was an investigation of major trends in thinking about the ideal nature of the university in this formative period of university education in America, and it was also a comparative look at the actual policies and practices of about a dozen leading academic institutions during this fast-changing span of time.published or submitted for publicatio
