Effects of telenursing program on the level of activities of daily living independence among patients with stroke

This study utilized True Experimental Pretest-Post-test design to determine the effects of auricular acupuncture (seeding) on the post-operative sleep among patients who underwent Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF). Respondents of the study included 22 patients aged 20 years old and above who had open reduction internal fixation. The setting is located at SuZhou hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in-patient ward. The respondents of the study were randomly selected using the criteria set by the researcher. The Groningen Sleep Quality Scale (GSQS) developed by Mulder et al., (1980) was utilized to assess patient\u27s sleep quality. It consisted of 15 true-false statements about their previous night’s sleep. Summing it up yields to generalized sleep quality score. The higher the scores they get at GSQS translates to poorer quality of sleep (Mariam Zabihi ,2016). Prior to the actual data gathering, permission was solicited from the Nursing research office, Chairman of the second division of orthopedics department. Upon approval, the researcher conducted the study. The statistical tools used were (a) percentage distribution, (b) mean, and (c) Dependent Samples T-test and (d) Independent Samples T-test. Percentage distribution was applied to determine the demographic profile of the respondents such as age, sex, civil status, religious affiliations and educational attainment. Mean scores determined the level of sleep quality of the respondents before and after auricular acupuncture(seeding). Dependent T-test compared the pre-test and post-test sleep scores within the treatment group and the comparison group. Lastly, Independent Samples T-test determined the differences on the level of sleep quality between the two groups.In the light of the results of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1)Majority of selected post-operative clients were male aged 61 years old and above, married, attained Junior middle school and below as well as monthly family income between¥3000and¥8000. There was no significant difference when the participants are grouped according to age, sex, civil status, educational attainment and monthly family income; 2) There was a severe level of postoperative sleep disorder both in the comparison and treatment group of selected post-operative clients prior to the implementation of auricular acupuncture (seeding). Meanwhile, after the implementation of the auricular acupuncture (seeding), the treatment group experienced mild post-operative sleep, while the comparison group experienced moderate post-operative sleep; 3) Auricular acupuncture improved the post-operative sleep quality of patients who underwent ORIF as results showed that scores of patients from treatment group improved from severe post-operative sleep disorder to mild post-operative sleep disorder; 4)There is a significant difference in the level of sleep quality of the respondents in the comparison group and the treatment group after auricular acupuncture (seeding). Therefore, auricular acupuncture (seeding) is an effective intervention to improve sleep quality of the post- operative patient
