Determination of the antimicrobial activity of the fractions of the methanolic extracts (leaf and Stem) of Stevia rebaudiana against staphylococcus epidermidis

The methanolic extract that was obtained from the dried Stevia rebaudiana leaves and stems was subjected to fractionation through column chromatography with varying proportions of choloroform and methanol towards increasing polarity. The distinct collection of compounds present in each solvent were illustrated through thin layer chromatography screening. Antimicrobial testing was done by turbidance assay specifically using a microplate reader. The growth rates of the treatment groups were compared with control groups and the percentage growth inhibition was determined. Methanolic extracts of Stevia rebaudina possess anti-microbial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis, with phenolic compounds such as flavonoids and quinones for the more polar fractions including 100% methanol and 75% methanol 25% methanol fractions as the potential possible compounds responsible for anti-microbial activities
