Problem Studied: The numbers of overweight people in the United States have more than doubled since the 1980's. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the percentage of overweight and obese Americans between the ages of 20 and 74 has increased from 15% of the population in 1980 to 32.9% of the population in 2004. This trend seems to hold true for children and adolescents, as well. In 2004, 17.1% of U.S. children and adolescents were overweight (Ogden, et al., 2004).
