Cutting edge technologies require advanced materials that meet the challenge of integrating more functions into smaller and smaller sized devices. The current target is creation of devices and circuits with molecular level dimensions. Biocompatible materials that directly assemble into ordered and multifunctional structures are not readily available. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has emerged as a material that may fill this void. This dissertation describes basic research exploring how guanine quadruplex DNA sequences self-assemble, bind ligands, and can be formulated into novel structures of suitable size for nanodevices.
