A case analysis of the perceptions of burned victims of the self and the others\u27 appraisal of the self

This study is about the perception of severely burned individuals with respect to their selves and others\u27 appraisal. In this regard, the study also touched on how these perceptions affected their self-esteem. A sample of seven participants who suffered second to third degree burns participated in the study. The participants belonged to the age bracket of 16 to 24 years of age during the incident that caused the deformity which occurred not more than three years ago. A case analysis using qualitative approach to data analysis was employed using an in-depth unstructured interview. In the results, the participants were found to have developed positive perceptions of their selves despite their deformity. They became strong-willed and more determined, also more optimistic and more mature attitude emerged. They also possessed a stronger faith in God. Yet negative perceptions of them selves were still evident such as feeling inferior and detachment. With regard to their perception of others\u27 appraisal, negative perceptions such as bias judgments and negative reaction as well as discrimination emerged as compared to their positive perception which is understanding from others. Their subjective perceptions on how others perceive them would likely be viewed as their own reactions to other deformed individuals if ever the incident did not occur
