We got game: The influence of performance quality and goals on the self-confidence in professional basketball

The study dealt with the possible influence of professional athletes\u27 task-oriented and ego-oriented goals, as well as their individual and team performance, on the players task-oriented and ego-oriented confidence. Players of the Philippine Basketball Association completed an instrument assessing basketball players\u27 task-oriented and ego-oriented goals and task-oriented and ego-oriented confidence. Results of the study indicate that: (A) Team and individual performance did not influence the athletes\u27 task-oriented confidence and the athletes\u27 ego-oriented confidence. (B) task-oriented confidence would increase if greater emphasis were given on task-oriented goals, but not when greater emphasis were given on ego-oriented goals, and (C) ego-oriented confidence would increase if greater emphasis were given on ego-oriented goals, as well as when greater emphasis were given in task-oriented goals. The simplifications of these results on the training of professional basketball players is discussed
