Si bakla at tomboy sa mundo ni girl at boy: A qualitative study on Filipino lesbian and gay couples in a heteronormative environment

Heteronormativity, as supported by previous literature, exist in the Philippines. Using the qualitative method of research and through the phenomenological constructivist approach, eighteen (18) participants who are currently in a same-sex relationship, agreed to participate in an interview wherein they shared their experiences as being part of a same-sex relationship in a heteronormative environment. To analyze their responses, the narrative design of qualitative research was used, after careful analysis and deliberation, by the researchers, it has been found that the negative experiences would have to do with the negative reactions received when information of one\u27s sexuality and relationship has been disclosed and/or with the presence of publicly displayed intimate affection which leads them to regulate themselves in manner where the situation of negative experience will be avoided such as to act discreetly and reduce the relationship involvement. With the stress brought by the heteronormative environment and regulations made to not attract negative experience from the environment, coping mechanisms have been used to reduce this stress such as adopting a passive attitude, seeking social support and focusing on the relationship
