Anti-microbial property of Peperomia pellucida (L.) HBK (pancit-pancitan) extracts against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus

Extract from the leaves and stems of Peperomia pellucida was tested for the presence of antimicrobial property against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using the modified disc agar diffusion method. Distilled water and 95% ethanol were the extracting solvent used and also used in the control. Three concentrations of Peperomia pellucida\u27s distilled water extract and 95% ethanol extract were prepared, respectively. The concentrations used were 50%, 33% and 25%. In the 50%, 33% and 25% concentrations of distilled water extract, all of the test organisms used were inhibited. On the other hand, the only test organism not inhibited by all of the concentrations used in the 95% ethanol extract was Bacillus subtillis and the rest were inhibited by this extract. The results showed that the pure extract of Peperomia pellucida has antimicrobial activity on all of the test organisms. The zones of inhibition produced compared to the control were significantly different. Distilled water extract and 95% ethanol extract also showed zones of inhibition. However, one-way analysis of variance showed that the zones of inhibition produced using different concentrations of the plant extracts were not significantly different from the control
