The novel Marble and Opal is an attempt at a four-part Secondary World fantasy novel which explores a world as seen through the eyes of various characters inhabiting it. Each Part focuses on the internal and external journeys taken by different characters belonging to generations and races of people whose relationships to one another, to their environment, and to enchantment influence the forms in which magic is practiced. These, in turn, profoundly affect the consequences of using these evolving forms of magic. The process essay will touch upon the writers fantasy and speculative influences, how these have reconfigured the writers relationship with the genre and how these affect the shaping of the project
