Influence of self-concept, appraisal of life events and social support on subjective well-being of Filipino adolescents

This study examines the influence of self-concept, appraisal of life events and social support on the subjective well-being of 106 Filipino adolescents from varied backgrounds. Five self-reporting questionnaires were administered to participants, namely Student Life Satisfaction Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, Student Self-Concept Scale, Perceived Events Schedule, and Provision of Social Support Relations. Pearson\u27s Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis were employed for the statistical treatment of the data. Components of subjective well-being, namely life satisfaction and positive and negative affect were separately investigated for their correlation with the variables of self-concept, social support and life events. The results of the study showed that the level of life satisfaction and positive effect were above average and negative effect was moderate for majority of these adolescents. The self-concept scores indicated a confident behavior. Social support from family and friends were high but neither was significantly correlated with SWB. The adolescents experienced many life events within the past year, but most of these events were perceived or appraised to be positive, good or desirable. Life satisfaction was significantly correlated with social self-concept and positive affect was significantly correlated with all the domains of self-concept and appraisal of life events. The domain of social self-concept was found to be the best predictor of life satisfaction. Together with appraisal of life events it is also the best set of predictors of well-being of the Filipino adolescents. In conclusion the results of the study on subjective well-being of the Filipino adolescents show that in general these adolescents enjoyed high life satisfaction, high positive effect and moderate negative effect. Their self-concept was above average. They had strong social support and a positive perception of life events. Their well-being was influenced by social self-concept and appraisal of life events.
