A proposed guidance program for San Jose Academy and a guidance in-service training program with emphasis on behavior modification for the faculty of San Jose Academy, Antique

The first part of this study proposes a guidance program for the high school department of San Jose Academy. Three questionnaires-opinionnaires were prepared by the researcher for teachers, students, and parents. A Personal and Professional Data Sheet was also constructed for all teachers and Sisters involved in the school. The Manila Counseling Inventory, a checklist of problems, was also used to determine the problem areas of the students. Aside from the personal observations and knowledge of the researcher, the school principal, the Sisters working in the school, the teachers, the non-teaching staff, the guidance coordinator of the town\u27s public school, the guidance worker of the local college, and the Bishop of the Diocese were interviewed to gather data for the study. The proposed guidance program had been organized for the schoolyear 1974-1975. The findings of the study showed that the existing guidance services of the school were unorganized and not adequate to meet the needs of the school community. These needs clustered around four interrelated areas : school, oneself, relationship with others, and the home and family. The proposed program was meant to be integrated into the educational program of the school, and not exist apart from it. The program utilized the developmental, preventive, and remedial orientations of guidance. To carry out the objectives of the guidance program, the team approach was proposed. These teams have definite functions but would collaborate with one another to facilitate Student Assessment, Information, Counseling, Placement and Follow-up, and Evaluation Services. The second part of the study dealt with the guidance aspect of an intensive in-service training program for the faculty members of San Jose Academy. The faculty members were surveyed with regards to familiarity with the guidance terms found in the proposed guidance program and with reference to the degree of importance they gave to guidance-related topics which were expected to be covered in the In-Service training period. A self-evaluation was also made of their role as teacher-counselors. The teachers also listed down common maladaptive behaviors which were typical of the students they dealt with. The findings of the surveys made indicated the interest and the willingness of the teachers to cooperate in the implementation of the guidance program. The proposed program was made up of two parts. Part I was an initiation to guidance in general and to the proposed guidance program in particular. Part II was devoted to the acquisition of skills in Behavior Modification. The Guidance In-Service Training Program was therefore intended to acquaint the faculty with the philosophy and principles of guidance, the relationship between guidance and education, the teacher\u27s role in guidance, and other related topics. It was concluded that the organization of a Guidance In-Service Training Program was a logical step in the implementation of the a guidance program.
