Personality characteristics of the grade school teachers of St. Mary\u27s Academy, Pasay, Metro Manila: Its relationship to teaching effectiveness and absenteeism

This study endeavors to present the personality characteristic profile of the grade school teachers of St. Mary\u27s Academy (SMA) of Pasay, Metro Manila and its relationship to teaching effectiveness and absenteeism. The study used the descriptive method of research to determine the personality characteristic profile of the grade school teachers and to identify the relationship between the teachers\u27 personality characteristics and their teaching effectiveness and absenteeism. The respondents of the study were 82 grade school teachers of St. Mary\u27s Academy of Pasay for the school year 1983-1984. The instruments used were the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF) devised by Cattell, the SMA Teachers\u27 Proficiency Rating Form (TPRF) and the SMA Teachers\u27 Attendance Record (TAR). The findings showed that the grade school teachers of SMA belong to the average category on the personality dimensions in Cattell\u27s 16 primary personality factors. Majority (72 percent) of the SMA grade school teachers were rated as Good or Average in their teaching effectiveness. The instructional process in SMA during school year 1983-1984 suffered an absenteeism rate of 3.87 percent, wherein on the average, three teachers were absent each day or each teacher incurred seven days absence during the school year. Being venturesome, sociable, bold and ready to try new things, spontaneous and abundant in emotional response were the characteristics or factors which tended to make a teacher more effective. The other personality factors, as defined by Cattell, had nothing to do with teaching effectiveness. It was also found that absenteeism behavior was caused, not by internal predispositions of the teachers but by outside factors
