Rachel's Acute Stress Disorder in The Girl on The Train Novel

This study analyses one of Paula Hawkin’s works, entitled The Girl on The Train. This novel tells about a woman who experienced a setback in her life after she divorced her husband. She was named Rachel, due to the trauma Rachel had experienced she endured extreme pain due to the failure of her marriage. Since then Rachel lost a lot of things in her life such as work, friend and even herself. This study aims to observe any symptoms and causes a person can experience acute stress disorder. Therefore, this study applies Richard Bryant's theory of acute stress disorder and psychological analysis theory from Sigmund Freud about the id, the ego and the superego, the human psyche. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. Data from this research are the girl on the traun novel and other sources related to problem formulation.The data were analyzed from the attitudes, behaviors and events experienced by Rachel uses acute stress disorder Richard Bryant's theory,which he described that someone as acute stress disorder showed several symptoms such as, intrusive memories, negative mood, dissociation, avoidance and arousal after experienced trauma event(s). The results of this study indicate that Rachel has an acute stress disorder. The 5 symptoms of acute stress disorder experienced by Rachel, such as intrusion symptoms, negative mood, avoidance symptoms, dissociative symptoms and arousal symptoms. Acute stress disorder in Rachel's character is triggered by the superego factor
